Portable air conditioners
Portable units can be useful where permanent installation is not possible or when you only need occasional temporary cooling. They normally need a hose to reject heat outside, take up floor space and keep the compressor inside the room, which can make them more noticeable acoustically.
Fixed split systems
A split system places the compressor outside and the indoor unit on the wall or another suitable position. That usually gives a quieter indoor experience, more controlled airflow and the option of efficient heating as well as cooling on reversible systems.
Which makes more sense for a home?
If the problem happens every summer, affects sleep or you want year-round heating and cooling, a fixed system can be a more permanent solution. If you rent, cannot alter the property or only need occasional cooling, portability may matter more.
